Pandemic Preparedness/ Global Health Security
The 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza outbreak highlighted the critical importance of our public health system and in particular health surveillance. This outbreak affected populations around the world and occupied significant public health resources. The outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2002 is another example of a disease outbreak that affected the delivery of health services and required policies to safeguard people’s lives. For years, public health officials around the world had been planning for a flu pandemic like H1N1 and the outbreak highlighted the importance of pandemic preparedness to ensure the health of populations globally. The following papers examine some aspects of pandemic planning, the Canadian public health system and health surveillance. Edited works
